Sutro Baths | Hello San Francisco

I've been to Sutro Baths a couple of times for client sessions and I've always wanted to go back on my own so, a few weeks ago, I grabbed a roll of film and headed out. The Sutro Baths used to be a large, privately owned swimming complex right on the edge of the Pacific coast. Think turn-of-the-century spa with club rooms, private dressing rooms, and saltwater and freshwater pools with slides. Shortly after closing in 1966, the building burned down leaving behind what looks like ancient ruins, except it's just concrete from 50 years ago. With sea water pouring into the empty pools and wildlife springing through the cracked and crumbled concrete, Nature has slowly taken back what Man left behind.

If you're in the area, I highly recommend checking it out. You can explore the Lands End trails while you're there and take in some truly gorgeous views (assuming Karl the Fog isn't around).

Happy Weekend

central valley california

Well, here we are. The end of the week and almost the end of May. Can you believe we're nearly at the halfway point of 2016? I feel like I was just planning out my quarterly & yearly goals and now, here we are, five months (almost) down and only seven to go. How did that happen?

We have rain in the forecast for tomorrow but I'm hoping it holds out as I have an engagement session scheduled. My clients have chosen a few very cool neighborhoods for a more "urban San Francisco" shoot and I'm super pumped so I don't want to reschedule! I also have a wedding on Sunday at one of my favorite wedding spots here in the city so this is shaping up to be a very busy but love-filled weekend.

What about you? What's on your agenda for the next two days?

10 Things To Be Happy About Today

reasons to be happy today

1 | I woke up! I mean, seriously, if being alive is not reason enough to be happy about today, the rest of this list won't really matter.

2 | Coffee. It's delicious, it's easy to make, it's warm and comforting, and it's energizing. It's happiness in a cup!

3 | Rico went to sleep within ten minutes of me putting him down for his nap this morning and he's still sleeping soundly an hour later. And the choir sang Hallelujah.

4 | Food. Our fruit bowl is overflowing and our fridge is filled to the brim. This hasn't always been the case for me in life and just seeing the abundance in our kitchen fills me with gratitude everyday.

5 | Flowers. They're blooming everywhere in the city, like daily gifts from Mother Nature and, as basic as this may be, I've already purchased my first peonies of the season. One of them now lives beside the bed. #ImBasicAndIKnowIt

6 | The Husband. Waking up with him and having breakfast together as a little family, even if Rico does through his food all over the kitchen, makes mornings so much easier for this natural night owl.

7 | Scan Day! Well, technically it's tomorrow but we're now one day closer. I have five rolls I'm anxious to see and tomorrow -tomorrow!- the scans will be ready to download. I'll have to wait a teensy bit longer to get the negatives and prints, though, but that's okay. I can wait with the scans in hand.

8 | Gia & Juno. They were looking for a little extra attention this morning and I'm always happy to oblige. Honestly, nothing relaxes me more than petting those fuzzy little critters.

9 | Fresh air. The weather has been on the warmer side lately so I've been opening the windows first thing in the morning. The crisp spring air fills the apartment and keeps it cool as the suns warms the day.

10 | Motivation. I've been reading Better Than Before and finding lots of motivation and inspiration to finally adapt some healthier habits. Theresa's Post-It method for workout motivation has been surprisingly effective for me, too. I've actually managed to stick to my "workout 5 days a week" habit for three weeks now!

What are you happy about today?

8 Flattering and Sexy One-Pieces for Summer

I've never really been much of a bikini gal. Part of it is, of course, my own body insecurities. My midsection has always been my least favorite part so it makes sense I wouldn't be inclined to put it on full display. But for much of my high school and college days, one-piece swimsuits just weren't in style. Sure you'd see a few in the stores but they were usually beyond basic and not very supportive. Because of this, I can honestly say I didn't even own a swimsuit in college. I was living in Chicago so it wasn't that big of a deal but there was just no way I was going to don a teeny tiny two-piece.

But now? One-piece swimsuits have had quite the makeover these days. Sexy, sporty, vintage, quirky, cool - whatever your style, there's a one-piece out there for you. And you're going to want one because one-pieces have a lot more going for them than just the (much appreciated) belly camouflage. Convenient (no mix-matching or lost pieces), comfortable (no riding up or slipping off), and completely on trend for the season, here are a few of my current faves.

flattering sexy one piece swimsuits

1 |  Seea Palm Zuma One-Piece - If you're looking for a suit that can go from beach to boardwalk to dinner al fresco this summer, this little beauty is up for the job!

2 | Seamed Underwire One-Piece - The clean lines and neutral tones make this one a classic that will undoubtedly be in style for many summers to come.

3 | Seafolly Umbrella One-Piece - The retro cut and cute umbrella print make will add tons of fun to your beach and pool lounging.

4 | Mara Hoffman Pinwheel One-Piece - The keyhole neckline and side cutouts make this one a personal fave. Now if only it would go on sale...

5 | Seaway of Life One-Piece - Okay so this boho number is currently sold-out (surprised?) but you can sign up for a notification when it becomes available again!

6 | Criss-crossed My Mind One-Piece - Hello, beach bombshell! Va va voom!

7 | Out From Under Plunging V-neck - Tan that cleavage, girl. You know you want to. You know you also want to click on that link so you can check out the back of this suit, too. It's totally worth it.

8 | Without Walls Arabesque One-Piece - That is NOT two separate suits you're seeing up there. That is one reversible suit. Classic nude or sporty teal, it's like two suits in one to suit (<-- see what I did there) whatever mood you're in.

Would you ever wear a one-piece swimsuit?

Currently | Vol. 6

Watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, in addition to my regularly scheduled late-spring programming, Game of Thrones! (SPOILER) Jon Snow lives! Hooray! But now his watch has ended... I hate that the show has surpassed the books because now I'm having a Towelie moment with every episode. I have no idea what's going on.

Reading Better Than Before and working on establishing some good habits, like exercise daily, scheduling a block of time for writing, and creating a weekly "Power Hour" to just get the shizz done that wouldn't otherwise get done (e.g. purging my closet). The book has some great tips for building good habits based on personality type and reading about Gretchen Rubin's habits is motivating me to come up with some new ones of my own, too. I'm only about halfway through but I highly recommend it if you're looking to change up a few things in life or just need some inspiration and motivation.

Listening to lots of toddler music on Pandora. Rico has discovered dancing and loves to sway his little hips and shake his head whenever he hears the beat drop. I'm trying to mix in some 'real' music, too, lest he think ten different versions of Five Little Monkeys Jumping On The Bed is an acceptable example of musical variety.

Eating lots of stuff I probably shouldn't. I've been great about keeping sugar in check and staying away from sweets (minus that Tcho bar I finished off last night...) but I'm craving carbs like crazy these days. I just want to eat all things potato. Period. So I'm trying to shift focus onto protein instead (hence, reading Better Than Before to break the bad habit cycle).

Shooting film! All day, everyday. Okay, well not quite that frequently but definitely shooting lots of it. I've decided to just shoot film for all my personal work this year. Yesterday, I mailed off five rolls to the lab with photos from Mother's Day, Rico's baptism, our weekend trip to the Merced County Spring Fair, and some random daily life shots. I'm dying with anticipation at seeing how they turned out but I have to wait another week or so until the scans come in. I almost forgot what it was like, this feeling of non-instant gratification.

Planning Rico's first birthday party. We're about six weeks away and I just know it'll sneak up on us before we know it so it's time get the ball rolling. It'll be a small celebration with just family but we live in a small city apartment so it requires some forethought. I've already reserved the park across the street. Next item on the list - check in with a couple food trucks about parking on the corner and serving up lunch. The less we have to pick up, pack in, or clean up after, the better.

Dreaming about vacation. We have a trip to San Diego planned for later this summer, which I'm super excited about. We'll definitely get our fill of yummy Mexican food and sunny beach days but I'm mostly excited because my lovely friend Michelle is having her first baby literally any day now and I hate that she's so far away! I can't wait to visit them this summer and meet the newest member of the family.

Loving how active, fun, and engaging Rico is these days. He has quickly become my little buddy and I can't wait for all the adventures in store for us. In case you missed his 10-month update yesterday, you can catch it all here.

Any fun plans for the weekend? Sunday is Bay To Breakers here in the city, which means if you're not planning on actually joining the festivities you should either stay home or get out of town to avoid the madness. We're considering a trip out of town. What are you up to?

10 Months

baptismal baby portraits

Loves

Giving kisses (when he wants to), walking and standing whenever/wherever he can, summer fruits (blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, cherries, grapes), hanging out with people, going for walks, pushing the limits

Hates

That he can't run yet.

Oh, this little guy... His personality is really starting to bloom now. He has become super affectionate and loves giving hugs and kisses. He even knows Eskimo kisses and tries so hard to be gentle as he brings his nose in close to mine. He kisses his toys, hugs his books, and is basically the sweetest baby ever.

He is also incredibly active and started walking just four days after hitting the 10-month mark. It started with just two little steps before falling down and now, he's all over the place. Sometimes he still falls after two or three steps but other times he makes it all the way across the room and down the hall before I know what's happening. He's fast. And he so desperately wants to run. As soon as he nails this whole 'balance' thing, life will never be the same.

Food is just as fun as ever and we've been introducing lots of new things lately thanks to a combination of weekly CSA deliveries and fun family events. Cherries are his latest fave and he full-on threw a fit when we ran out. He has two new teeth to munch all that food with and his little baby palate is expanding quite a bit, too. He's just as happy chowing down on pesto or tilapia with green chile sauce as he is with a grilled cheese and sliced pears. And he doesn't need any help with eating all that food either, thankyouverymuch. He has discovered he is an independent little boy and will assert that independence whenever he can. He wants to open the pack of crackers and take one out for himself. He wants to hold the fork, even though he's still not quite sure how to use it. He wants to hold the water cup. If I offer it to him, he turns his head away. I have to set it on the table next to him so he can pick it up himself. And when he wants more, he'll let you know with a few grunts of "Moh!" while banging his hand on the table.

His photos this month are from his baptism, which was held the day after he turned 10 months. He was his usual self and behaved just as expected - curious about everything (turning his head to look at the priest while he was pouring the water) and happily engaged as the center of attention. I took the portraits in his baptismal outfit the day after, which he tolerated for approximately three minutes before he was off and running once again.
