Watching United States of Tara. It came up on my suggested shows list and I took the bait. It's fascinating and makes me a) want to study psychology and b) want to be Toni Collette because she's ah-mazing.

Reading Yes Please. I know, I've been reading it for a long time. I took a pause in leisurely reading because, parenthood, but I'm back on the reading train and picked up right where I left off. It's just as hilarious and insightful as I remembered, too.

Listening to the wind rustling the trees. It's lovely, the sounds you hear (or don't hear) when baby is sleeping.

Eating too many Reece's peanut butter eggs. Then again, part of me believes there's no such thing as too many - the same part of me that believes calories don't count when you're on vacation.

Drinking lots and lots of water, when I remember. I've been really bad about that lately and have even been getting migraines from dehydration. It's bad, I know. But I honestly just forget to drink water some days so I've started carrying my water bottle with me wherever I go again. Next step, drink it!

Craving travel. Anywhere. Mexico, Hawaii, France, Scotland, Bali, Peru, New York City, Chicago. We haven't had a real vacation in a while (I don't count trips to visit family as 'vacation') and my wanderlust is kicking into major overdrive.

Wishing I'd given up Facebook sooner. For Lent this year, I gave up Facebook. We're just over one week into it and, though it was a little tough at first, I'm actually enjoying my Facebook-free life. I'm finding time to read during the day (see above), go for more walks, and generally seem to be in a less disgruntled mood. I'm not saying that's all FB's fault but it's an interesting coincidence at the very least. I should've done this months ago!

Loving the early spring we've been enjoying here! After a chilly December and January (nothing compared to the rest of the country but chilly for us), it seems that ol' groundhog was right about spring coming early. It's been sunny most days and in the high 60s/low 70s around here for the last two weeks or so. The birds are singing, the trees are blooming, and the days are getting just a little bit longer, too. What's not to love?

Wondering if you have any good podcast recs? I need something to listen to when up late at night editing photos!

Happy Weekend!

Solvang and Mission San Louis Obispo | On Film

solvang missionI recently developed a roll of film that had been in my camera for a few months. I shot about half the roll while we were on our babymoon back in May. This was my first time shooting on Kodak Ektar and I really like how the photos turned out (I'm most in love with the soft rose-gold undertones). Looking back on these makes me want to plan another trip to Solvang asap. There were so many little shops and tasting rooms we didn't have time for. Not that I could've gone wine tasting at 36 weeks pregnant, but still. Lots left to explore!

Seven Months

seven month old baby photos

Loves

Almost all foods, being outside, seeing people/being social, swinging at the park, playing with the piggies, waving to cars

Hates

Naps (we're working on it), broccoli, not being included (aka not being the center of attention)

You know how after a few days of pounding storms with dark looming clouds and crashing thunder, the skies finally part and the sun streams through making it feel like the most glorious day ever? That's exactly how month seven felt. Rico has been in the best of moods the last few weeks, smiling when he wakes up and eager to see what the day holds for him. He's happiest when he's the center of attention, whether it's being included in the conversation where he holds his own with babbles of "mamamamama bababababa, dadadada, gah gah gah" or it's introducing new toys or foods, he doesn't seem to mind having all eyes on him. And he totally plays it up, too. He turns on the charm when meeting new people, smiling bashfully and tilting his head ever so slightly, and warms up to new faces pretty easily. Six months ago I never thought I'd say this but he is quite a joy to be around now!

The day he turned 7 months, he started sitting up completely unassisted! #goals

He is also loving solids. After consulting with our pediatrician, we decided to skip the purees and go the baby-led weaning route of introducing finger foods right from the beginning. I was nervous at first because it was all so new and foreign but, I now know without a doubt that it was absolutely the right decision for us. For the first few weeks, Rico was receptive to the foods we offered and gleefully picked them up, mushed them between his fingers and occasionally got a few bits in his mouth. There were some foods he ate fairly easily in the beginning (cucumber, steamed carrots, oatmeal, etc) but for the most part the food was ending up on the floor or all over his face/hands/clothes. But in the last week or two, he really figured out the whole chew and swallow thing! He has two little teeth now that help him scrape foods like avocado and orange off the peel and take actual bites of carrot, stewed beef, teething crackers, etc so a lot more is making it down his gullet. He has reached the point where he now gets annoyed or frustrated if we're eating and he's not included and he has tried so many foods I've lost track of the variety.

The ONE thing he refuses to eat is broccoli! I've offered it three different ways now with varying levels of seasoning and every single time he throws it off his tray without even really trying it. He just wants nothing to do with it. This totally blows my mind because broccoli is one of a few select vegetables that I LOVE and will eat pretty much any way it's prepared. Basically, I've never met a broccoli I didn't like but Rico can't stand even the site of it! I'm convinced he'll come around eventually if I just keep trying new ways of cooking it.

His budding relationship with his piggy sisters is pretty adorable to watch, too. He is still fascinated by every move and sound they make. In fact, my sure-fire way to keep him happy in the evenings when he's at his fussiest is to bring them out to play and let him just hang out on the floor watching them run around. Gia is still a little cautious around him - his excited squeals and sudden movements can be a bit scary for her. But Juno seems to get that he's harmless and she's almost as curious about him as he is about her. Last weekend, they seemed to be playing a little game with each other where he would stick his hand out and she'd come over to lick his fingers, then he'd pull his hand away and she'd run off - not far though, and she was always keeping an eye on him. He'd stick his hand out again and, again, she'd come over to lick his fingers. They did this over and over for a few minutes, with Rico smiling at her the whole time, until Juno got distracted and ran off to play with Gia. It warmed my heart and confirmed for me that we made the right decision in adopting Juno when we did. I can't get over how sweet, patient, and affectionate she's been with him, especially for still being so young herself.

His chubby little thighs are my favorite.

We're still not exactly sure what color his eyes are. Some days they look grayish-blue, other days they look green so for now, we're calling them hazel.

Yawning, drooling, looking everywhere but at me ... he's so over this whole photo shoot business.

Each day gets more and more enjoyable for all of us with this little guy and we can't wait to see what the next few months bring. Before you know it, we're going to be planning his first birthday party!
