The soul is healed by being with children. -Dostoyevsky

It wasn't a particularly special day. No big events to attend, nothing particularly adventurous to document and remember. And yet, somehow I just know these little moments are the ones we'll treasure the most in the years to come.

A Walk Down The Street

Rico was napping and The Husband was zoned out at his desk, headphones on, churning away at work. This was my moment. The opportunity I had been waiting for all week long. A free hour on a Sunday afternoon! Out I went for a little stroll, camera in hand, to take in the lovely weather and see what there was to see. Just me and one camera, one lens, and half a roll of film.

Now let me take a minute to tell you something about the car in the next photo. I saw it out, perched in the driveway, as I crossed the street and headed down the block. I thought it was just hanging out, soaking in the sun but just as I lifted my camera to take a photo, I saw a lady in a straw hat giving it a wash. My introverted-ness kicked in and I immediately put the camera down and continued on my walk. I past the car and its lovely home and owner, down the block past another few houses, and as I stepped off the curb to cross the street, I paused. Right there, right off the sidewalk (fully blocking a prized city parking space, by the way). It was a moment of internal conflict.

I've been enamored with classic cars for a long time. My MIL's Alfa Romeo even made a cameo in our wedding photos. I'll be the first to admit this is purely a superficial attraction. I, much like Jon Snow, no nothing (about classic cars). I couldn't tell you the first thing about what "offically" makes them special. For me, it's purely aesthetic. The lines, the curves, the details, the colors - all reminders of a bygone era. Looking at them stirs the same feelings as when I look at old film photos of people and places I've never met or visited but feel like I belong to. I can't help but photograph them and that draw is even stronger now that I've been shooting solely film for personal work. Film and classic cars go together like peanut butter and jelly.

I stood frozen in the street, camera in hand, heart being pulled back to that cream car in the driveway. I knew if I continued on my way without taking a shot, I'd regret it. I wanted to freeze that scene, that moment, to revisit again and again and if I didn't, I'd be flat out angry with myself. But I also didn't want to intrude or interrupt her task! So I walked over to a tree and looked up. Doo di-doo di-doo... don't mind me, just looking up a tree. Wouldn't you know the sunlight was just perfect at that moment, so I snapped the golden glow through the leaves then, without pausing to think, lowered my camera and took the shot I really wanted. It wasn't until after that I noticed the lady in the straw hat looking in my direction. I bet she gets a lot of folks who want to pictures of her car. I smiled and waved, she waved back, and I went on my way, back to the never-ending hunt for heart-stopping scenes.

A Day In The Life Of A 1-Year Old

You may or may not have noticed, but I totally failed at posting Rico's 11-month and 12-month updates. Don't worry, he still around, still living the good life chillin' in his cushy room, rent-free. Although, we are still waiting for him to get a job and start contributing to the grocery bill...

Anyway, we celebrated his first birthday last month and I got inspired to do a new longterm photo project - document each of his birthdays from beginning to end, every year until he's 18. My 'big idea' is to put together some sort of book or collection of all his birthdays from 1yr. to 18yrs. and give it to him when he's older (not sure when, exactly but I'll figure that part out later). I don't really recall seeing photos from my childhood until I was an adult. We didn't have albums stacked on the shelves, shoe boxes overflowing in the closet, or hallways plastered with printed memories. Sure, I saw a handful over the years but not many and not often. I've recently realized it's part of the reason I'm so drawn to photography. The ability to time travel in real life, that's what childhood photos mean to me. To revisit a time, a place, a memory, a person that has long since passed us by. And what better days to revisit than birthdays?

So. Here's his first. There were some kinks in terms of shooting and parenting at the same time, and some moments where things got busy and I just didn't think to pick up the camera, but such is life with a crazy active toddler. All in all I'm happy with how it went for my first go-around so I'm not beating myself up too much about the parts of the day I missed. Besides, I have 17 more years to nail my "birthday documentary" coverage anyway so it's all good.

* * * * * * *

Of course, I got too busy with breakfast duties first thing in the morning so coverage of the day technically started after his morning nap. First up, a diaper change and some sunglasses to play with and distract him from trying to climb off the table.

He really didn't want to wear clothes after his morning diaper change. He nearly jumped off the table Superman-style when I tried to put a regular shirt on him!

After quite a bit of playing, reading, and a few rounds of Catch the Baby, I finally got him dressed and to the table for lunch. Sometimes I let him watch a little segment of Daniel Tiger while eating lunch. It gives me the chance to clean up a bit by keeping him engaged in something other than throwing food all over the kitchen.

(Note the food pouch on the floor. Whenever he's done with something, off the table it goes.)

After a too-short (for me) nap, it's time for errands, climbing all over the couch, and finally dinner. The Husband's birthday is the day after Rico's and it landed on a Friday this year. He ended up working late so we could all enjoy a 3-day weekend together. We saved Rico's cake for the next day, too, so it was just me and the little guy for dinner, bath, and bedtime that night.

Back into jammies and ready for bed (while I go clean that bathroom mirror...). He likes to "help" get ready for bed by combing his hair, which usually turns into him playing with the comb while I brush it.

Stern Grove Wedding | Sarah & Boris Say I Do

stern grove wedding san francisco

Where do I even begin with this wedding? Sarah is a friend from law school (she and The Husband were in the same class) and when she first contacted me about shooting their wedding, my heart was filled to the brim. It's always special when someone chooses me to be the one to capture such a momentous day but it's particularly heartwarming when it's someone you know and love. And when it's someone as kind, intelligent, funny, and fun-loving as Sarah, well ... I was over-the-moon honored.

Happy Weekend

35mm fuji 400h film

Oh, now it's Friday? For most of yesterday, I thought it was Friday and didn't fully realize it wasn't until about 5pm. The last five days are a blur of coffee consumption, diaper changes, and well-meaning but rarely fruitful attempts at getting work done. Can you tell it's been a long week? I'm looking forward to sleeping in a bit tomorrow (and by 'sleeping in' I mean hopefully until 8am but probably more like 7:30 because, baby) and not being rushed to do anything in particular this weekend. We're going to a birthday party tomorrow afternoon and keeping our Father's Day celebrations here in town, which means the next two days are shaping up to be a nice blend of relaxing and fun - just what the doctor ordered.

What do you have planned for the weekend?
