An Engagement Session at AT&T Park

Our tour guide asked why they chose AT&T Park for their engagement photos and Erica responded with, "We just love the Giants.  And we go to a lot of games together."  "Yeah, it's kinda what we do," Corrie added.

When planning for engagement sessions, I usually tell couples to think of locations that are meaningful to them or places that represent things they like to do.  If you have your session in a place where you're naturally comfortable, that ease will show through in the photos and make the whole experience more enjoyable.  So, to me, they're reasoning makes perfect sense.  And if you couldn't tell by the photos, they were definitely enjoying themselves!

This session was really more of a tour of AT&T Park for all three of us.  Shortly after arriving, we were greeted by our tour guide who took us immediately to the first stop on our tour - the Giants dugout.  The lovebirds were beyond giddy at this point, and it was only the beginning.  Besides taking in the views from nearly every angle imaginable at the ball park, we were also able to tour the batting cages, the Visitors' clubhouse, and the media room, among the many other nooks and crannies of the stadium we got to explore.  The World Series memorabilia and Commissioner's Trophies were icing on the cake.

But, of course, the session wasn't just about the tour.  It was about Erica & Corrie, experiencing something new and exciting and so very them, together.  Throughout our time at the park, the two reminisced about their favorite game highlights and cherished moments at the park together.  There were lots of "remember when. . . ." and "oh my gosh, that reminds me of. . . ." peppered in the talk of team history and game stats and wedding planning.  The two have made many memories here at AT&T Park and I have no doubt there will be many more to come.  Someday soon, they'll come to a game as Husband and Wife and sit amongst the crowds while reminiscing about that time they had the whole park to themselves.  And some time after that, they'll come to a game as Mom and Dad, to share the experience with the new members of their family and tell stories about that time, oh so long ago, when they toured the empty stadium on the most beautiful Bay Area afternoon.  And maybe after that game, they'll go home and get lost in the photos all over again, with a smile on their lips and love in their hearts.

Boudoir Thoughts

"boudoir photography san francisco"

I’m only calling it boudoir because that seems to be the most recognizable photography genre it falls into. And while a lot of it is and will be boudoir, I see it really as women’s portraiture. Because it’s about something much broader than boudoir. It’s about celebrating women.  It's about celebrating You. Women are beautiful and awesome, and for some reason it’s almost taboo to say that, especially when we say it about ourselves. We’re conditioned to strive for some sort of perfect ideal body, whether we realize it or not, when really the perfect body is the one we already have. It’s the body that survived all those hectic, overly worked, overly partied-out college years. That body withstood so much abuse back then, with the all-nighters and stressful exams, late-night dancefests with the girls and hangovers that kept you in bed till lunch the next day. Then add to that the pressures of being a real, live grown-up and all the additional sleepless nights, desperate fast food meals, and other questionable lifestyle choices you've made since becoming an adult and you've got to really marvel at how resilient the body is, even for just regular ol' day-to-day life.

20 Non-Traditional First Dance Songs for Your Wedding Day

"nontraditional first dance wedding songs"

With the busy wedding season just around the corner, I've been thinking a lot about wedding planning lately - the ups and downs, the worth-its and not-so-worth-its, and all the little things that go into making the day happen.  Having planned a wedding myself last year, and having photographed dozens more on top of that, I thought it might be helpful to share some wedding planning tips and ideas every now and then for all those brides and grooms looking for a little extra "wait, how do I do this?" advice.  First up, music!

One simple way to let your personality shine or your wedding day is through your music choice.  We all love Etta James (and I'm pretty certain I can sing every word of "At Last", totally flat and off-key, of course...).  She's a wedding day staple - and one of her songs is on my list! - but Etta James isn't for everyone.  Taking the time to find a first dance song that's just right for you and your love is definitely worth it.  For some couples, this is a no-brainer - they've had "their song" chosen since the first time they swayed rhythmically together on the dance floor oh so long ago.  It's the song that stirs something deep inside of them and has been "their song" since the beginning.  For others, the first dance song is not such an obvious choice, and like all things wedding-related, it's a matter of searching high and low until they find "The One."  So, for those still searching and deciding, here are just a few suggestions for some totally awesome and definitely under-used first dance songs for your wedding day.

"nontraditional first dance wedding songs"

1. "In My Life" - Johnny Cash
Don't get me wrong, I love The Beatles, but Johnny voice just melts you in this one.

2. "Into The Mystic" - Van Morrison
Classic.

3. "Save Me A Saturday Night" - Neil Diamond
It's just such a sweet song!

4. "Forever" - Ben Harper
"So give me your Forever.  Please, your Forever.  Not a day less will do from you."  It doesn't get more wedding appropriate than that, folks

5. "The Dress Looks Nice On You" - Sufjan Stevens
My bestie put this on a mix CD for me years ago and I always thought it'd be a nice wedding song.

6. "A Sunday Kind of Love" - Etta James
A lovely alternative to the all-too-popular "At Last."

7. "Birds of a Feather" - The Civil Wars
Imagine a starlit sky, with twinkle lights glowing above the dance floor and "who-o-o-o-o- could do-o-o-o- without you-ou-ou-ou?" drifting through the evening air as you're "dancing with the ball and chain."

8. "The Book of Love" - Magnetic Fields
It's a little bit quirky but a whole lotta awesome.

9. "Toothpaste Kisses" - The Maccabees
Very sweet, and just a little upbeat.

10. "You & Me" - Penny and the Quarters
You and me, you and me, nobody baby but you and me.

non-traditional first dance songs

11. "Nothing Can Change This Love" - Sam Cooke
"You Send Me" is a Sam Cooke wedding staple, but I prefer this little diddy instead.

12. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" - Queen
For something a little more fun to really get you moving.

13. "I Was Made For You" - She & Him
This song is like sunshine and lemonade for your dancing feet.

14. "I've Just Seen A Face" - The Beatles
I meant it when I said I loved The Beatles.  This was our "walk down the aisle" recessional song and one of my all-time fave Beatles tunes.

15. "Say Hey (I Love You)" - Michael Franti & Spearhead
There's no way you can listen to this song and NOT want to dance with the one you love.

16. "I've Got You Under My Skin" - Frank Sinatra & U2
An non-traditional duo for a non-traditional dance.

17. "Happiness Is You" - Johnny Cash
I know, two Johnny Cash songs on one list.  What???  This one is for the folks who want something just a little bit country and a little bit vintage.

18. "Sweet Pea" - Amos Lee
Toe-tapping, folky sweetness at its finest.

19. "A Wink and A Smile" - Harry Connick Jr.
Okay, it's from Sleepless in Seattle so maybe it's not so "non-traditional" but it's a goodie.  And I have yet to hear it as a first dance song at a wedding.

20. "Crazy Love" - Bob Dylan & Van Morrison

What was (or will be) your first dance song?  Anything you'd like to add to the list?

Ali & Ryan On Film

Santa Barbara Backyard Wedding | Ali & Ryan

"santa barbara backyard wedding"
The room was abuzz with chatter and laughter as I entered.  Ali was putting the finishing touches on her hair and makeup while her friends prepped her wedding garb.  Soon she'd be joining her love on their greatest adventure yet, marriage, but first - the dress.  Then the shoes, one foot at a time, slow and steady.  The vintage jewelry and flowing veil came next.  And then ... she was ready.

Ryan waited patiently in the Mural Room of the Santa Barbara courthouse.  When Ali finally entered, the mere sight of her took his breath away.  The two locked eyes instantly and held each others' gaze till the end of the ceremony.  To say they're smitten with each other would be putting it mildly.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds invited their loved ones to join them for delicious Mexican food (with tortillas made fresh before your eyes!) and dancing under the setting sun.  The day was the perfect mix of vintage romance and rustic backyard fun, and perfectly captured the joy these two bring to one another.

Ali & Ryan, thank you for choosing me to capture your wedding and welcoming me into your day with open arms.  It was an honor documenting the love you have not just for each other but for all those around you as well. ♥

Ali & Ryan waited until the ceremony to see each other for the first time, but Ali still had a special "first look" with her father.  His reaction at seeing his little girl in all her wedding loveliness for the first time was priceless.
