Viva Mexico, Uno | Barcelo Resort

barcelo resort puerto vallarta mexicoEarlier this month, The Husband and I celebrated our first anniversary with a trip to Puerto Vallarta. Back in June, we were just browsing Cheap Tickets for fun and found an ah-mazing deal that was just too good to pass up. We ended up spending a week at the all-inclusive Barcelo resort. Normally, I'd be a little leery of a crazy affordable all-inclusive place but we'd actually stayed at this one back in 2011 and knew it would be a good experience. I highly recommend it, and if you're not up for crowds, I'd also recommend traveling in September. It's the down season for tourism and, for the first few days of the week, we practically had the resort to ourselves. It started to fill up a little bit as the weekend drew closer, but it still was no more than 50% capacity. The one downside is that September is also the rainy season so it can be pretty hot and humid. Dark clouds roll in late in the day almost everyday (they make for amazing sunsets though) and sometimes it also rains for an hour or two. There was only one big storm the entire week we were there but I love a good summer thunderstorm so it didn't bother us a bit.

I was a little obsessed with all the butterflies on the property.

The husband was more interested in the resort activities program. We never did find out what 'Mexican Crazy Games' was...

Crazy Pictures Time. Turns out, it's just a couple of resort employees dressed in crazy outfits taking pictures with all the guests. Funny story about that. As I was lounging peacefully in that lovely hammock you see above, swaying with the breeze and slowly drifting off to sleep, I was suddenly and violently shaken awake by two girls in crazy wigs and oversized sunglasses who wanted to take a picture with me. And, of course, there was The Husband off to the side giggling like a school boy who just pranked his teacher. Being woken up after just falling asleep, I was too dazed to know what was going on but, a strawberry daquiri or two later, and I thought it was kinda funny too. We spent our entire first day in Mexico lounging by the pool, reading, and drinking unlimited frosty fruity boozy beverages. But the second day we took the bus into town for a little adventure. More on that later...
