Argentina | San Telmo and Plaza San Martin

buenos-airesOur first full day in Buenos Aires was a Sunday, and Sunday just happens to be the day of San Telmo's weekly street fair.  We decided to head over to the fair on foot so we could check out the sights on the 4-mile roundtrip walk.  One of my favorite things about Buenos Aires was all the different styles of architecture mixed in so close together.  Some of the buildings looked like they could be on the streets of Paris or Florence.  We started off by heading to Plaza de Mayo to check out Casa Rosada.  Sadly, the area was being set up for some sort of protest or rally, so the pink house was completely blocked from view.

After a quick stroll around the plaza, we headed over to Calle Defensa to check out the street fair.  It's a random mix of antique dealers, artisans, craftsmen, and people just selling junk.  We bought a few cool items from a couple of vendors but mostly just browsed the sights and enjoyed the street musicians and tango dancers.

No, your eyes are not playing tricks on you.  Those are, in fact, Baywatch card games in the photo below.  And the creepiest doll ever made . . .

On our way back to the apartment, we took a little detour through Plaza San Martin, a lovely park filled with people lounging under the trees, pet lovers on leisurely walks with their pups, and random dance shows for anyone strolling by.

I loved all the different trees in the park.  Those beautiful purple ones (left) were all over the city.  Does anyone happen to know what kind of tree that is?

More from Argentina coming soon . . . :)

  1. holy wow, that doll really is the creepiest ever! I feel like it's staring at me through the computer...eek. otherwise, Buenos Aires looks absolutely gorgeous! it seems to me to have this very interesting old world meets new world vibe that I'm sure makes it wonderful to visit and to explore.
