One Giant Ball of Awkward

I know this is usually Awkward & Awesome Thursday but this week I just have one giant Awkward for y'all.  I mean, this one is so chock full of Awkward you don't need anything else.  And, in a strange, strange way, it's kinda Awesome, too.  You ready for it?  Here goes.  Toddlers & Tiaras.  Yup.  You heard right.  Toddlers & Tiaras.  *Awwwwwwkwaaaaaard*  Does anyone else watch this show??  Am I the only one to have discovered this lovely little gem?  Please say it isn't so.  Please tell me you watch it, too.  Because I'm fascinated.  I feel like I'm getting a weird Twilight Zone-style education in all things pageantry.  Sparkle baby.  Go glitz or go home!

Your next Mini Grand Supreme
How do you guys feel about children's beauty pageants?  I remember thinking it was weird, even when I was young.  When I was in 6th grade, I knew a girl who competed in kids' beauty pageants.  I remember thinking, "Why?  I don't get it?"  I still feel that way.  Modeling I understand.  Dance shows I understand.  Community theatre for kids I understand.  But beauty pageants?  Where the girls try to look like living dolls/middle-aged women doing Glamor Shots in the early 90's?  That I don't understand.

Sparkle, baby.
The most fascinating part of this show is, by far, the moms.  Pageant moms are like stage moms on steroids.  And they run the full gamut - from ex-pageant queens with bleached hair and spray tans to Quakers.  Yes, Quakers.  They'll be on next week's episode in case you're curious.

And if, by chance, you haven't seen this show yet, let me introduce you to Makenzie:

  1. Awkward!! I hate this shit. All the make up and hair creeps me the freak out. If the argument is about the child wanting to perform, sing or dance, then send them to an acting class etc. Let them be little girls, don't make them old and take away their innocence too early.

As for the show, I've not seen it but my friends watch it and they're horrified and fascinated. I think I would get too angry!

  4. This show creeps me out. My roommate watches this show and I'll occasionally watch it with her until it starts to make me angry. The parents on this show make me so angry. How can you do that to your children??

And a 4 year old with a pacifier????

  5. I have never watched the show but have heard about it ... I feel bad for those kids ... I mean, they are kids, they should be worried about hair, make-up, their size ... they should just enjoy being kids!

  7. SO CREEPY!!! One time I won the drawing for a free Glamour Shots session so my mom and I went and spent the day at the mall geting me all dolled up. I gotta admit it was fun at the time (I was 10) but when we got the pictures they were CREEEEEEEEEPY. I was 10 but looked 25! YIKES!

  9. Totally awkward! That show is like a trainwreck that you can't help but watch, your not alone! I am AMAZED at how these parents allow their kids to be so disrepectful and rude!

  11. LOL! You are not alone! Yes, I hate to admit it, but I have watched this show. It's such a train wreck. I just can't look away. It's even a bigger bag o' dysfunctional crazy than the Real Housewives. (If you haven't watched that, I recommend the New Jersey one. It's a gem ;) )

  12. Ugh, this show disturbs me a little bit. It's incredibly awkward. I think pageants are fun and everything, but putting so much emphasis on beauty at such a young age seems very odd to me. Beauty comes from within, and I think it's difficult for children to learn that when they're being taught otherwise. Yikes!

  14. Oh my disturbing...yes, I am acquainted with this show and find it the most bizarre and crazy thing *ever*! I totally agree with you, I just don't get it! It really isn't teaching them any life skills or preparing them for something...even if they *win* they are still always PAYING MORE than they ever win! Loco. But it is definitely like a train wreck, you just can't look away!

  15. This stuff freaks me out! Seriously.. it's just not right on so many levels. The kids are getting spray-painted and wearing tons of makeup, and throwing tantrums for being oh-so tired, and getting brainwashed/cajoled/patronized to continue and put their best smile forward. Okay, I guess I just listed why people love it too.. but still, it's just not right. Imma vote "awkward" on this one.
